Freedom to Read Week!
Banned Books Week (September 26-October 2, 2021) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
This year’s theme is “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.” Sharing stories important to us means sharing a part of ourselves. Books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, creates barriers.
The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration to remember that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only because courageous librarians, teachers, students, and community members stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.
Stop by to see our Challenged Book Display, pick up a Bingo sheet to play, and perhaps challenge yourself to see how many ‘banned books’ you have read.

Research shows that reading to children in the home dramatically improves their academic success, supports their social-emotional development, and strengthens family ties. It is never too early to start reading to a child. Make reading together a part of your daily routine.
The Frederic Library offers record keeping for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten with an easy online app that helps parents record the number of books you and others read to your child. We also have self-guided notebooks upon request. Win prizes and see your child bloom with the world of books.
A library card is not necessary, but we encourage all parents to stop by the children’s room and roam the shelves. We are getting new books every month and have many on display. Don’t forget to check out the ‘tried and true’—maybe favorites from your own childhood! Share those memories with your child. Reading brings us all together. Parents can also find age appropriate DVDs that support fun and interactive learning.
September is Library Card Month!
It’s so easy to get a library card. Stop by the Library and fill out a simple registration card. Bring something that shows your current mailing address. A library card gives you access to 1.5 MILLION books, e-books, movies, audiobooks, music CDs, magazines, games, bicycles, and more!
Remember a library card gives online access to statewide databases: use it to find magazine, journal, and newspaper articles; genealogy sources; auto repair; consumer reports; free language lessons; and other learning tools provided by BadgerLink and IFLS Library System. All for free!
